8.4 Population of Syrian Origin: Size and Composition

As the previous section has just highlighted, immigration of Syrians into Belgium is very recent. Between 2011 and 2017, approximately 26,500 Syrian immigrations were recorded (based on recalculated flows, Table 8.1) and the number of Syrians leaving Belgium remained very low (less than 1000 people in 7 years, Fig. 8.9). As a result, the stock of people of Syrian origin in Belgium is strongly correlated to flows and has increased rapidly. In 2017, it stands at around 20–25,000 people, depending on the indicator chosen (see below).
